Visiting Carcassonne had been on my travel wishlist for many years, and during a summer holiday in the Côte d’Azur, we finally made it happen. If you’re ever in southern France, be sure to add a day trip to this medieval gem.

Stepping Into the Middle Ages
The moment we arrived, it felt like we had stepped into time — towering stone walls, winding cobblestone alleys, and turrets piercing the blue sky. The fortified city of Carcassonne is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval towns, and walking through its gates is like time-traveling to another era.

We wandered through the narrow streets lined with artisan shops and charming cafés, each corner revealing a new slice of history or a picture-perfect view. Our daughters were captivated by the fairy-tale feel of the place — it’s easy to see why Carcassonne has inspired so many legends and stories over the centuries.

Best Time to Visit
We visited in the summer, and the weather couldn’t have been more perfect. The sun was shining, but the stone walls and shady spots kept us cool as we explored. One of the highlights? Sitting under a huge tree in the heart of the old town, enjoying the most delicious coconut ice cream we’ve ever had. We still dream about that ice cream! It was one of those simple but unforgettable travel moments — peaceful, joyful, and just… perfect.

A Perfect Family Day Out
Carcassonne is incredibly family-friendly. Our daughters loved roaming the ramparts, peeking into medieval towers, and imagining life in a castle. It’s not just stunning for the eyes – it’s a place that stirs the imagination. Whether you’re a history lover or simply looking for a beautiful spot to wander, this place ticks all the boxes.
Tips for Your Visit:
Go early in the morning to avoid the summer crowds.
Try the coconut ice cream near the main square – Delicious… trust me!
Great destination for families with a lot of space to explore and enjoy.
Don’t forget your camera – the views from the city walls are incredible.
Entrance to the cité is free, but guided tours or entrance to the Château are well worth it if you’re into history.

Carcassonne was everything I had hoped it would be and more. It was a magical city filled with charm, history, and family memories. If you’re traveling through southern France, make sure this medieval gem is on your itinerary.
