Why You Should Visit Nara Park in Japan

Why Visiting Nara Park Was One of the Highlights of My Japan Trip

When I was planning my trip to Japan, I already knew that visiting Nara Park would be a must. Seeing and interacting with the famous deer had been one of those magical experiences I had dreamed about for so long, and I could not wait to have this experience for myself.

And visiting Nara truly became one of the highlights of this incredible trip to Japan.

How to Get to Nara Park from Osaka or Kyoto

One of the best things about visiting Nara is how easy it is to get there. Nara is the perfect destination for a morning or afternoon trip and can easily be reached from either Osaka or Kyoto.

I visited from Osaka, and I took two trains to get there. The first train was from Umeda Station to Kyoto, and the other train was from Kyoto Station to Nara. The journey was simple, smooth, and stress-free, making it a very easy day trip to add to any Japan itinerary.

The magic starts as soon as you arrive at Nara Station. Even the station signs are decorated with deer, instantly making you feel excited for what is to come. From the station, it is only a short uphill walk of about five minutes to reach the park.

First Impressions of Nara Park

As you get closer to the park, you begin to spot the gorgeous deer everywhere, walking freely through the green spaces, along the pavements, and even near the roads. I was completely mesmerised by them.

I honestly cannot describe how beautiful they were. Their fur looked so shiny and soft, and they had such a calm and peaceful presence. One of the things that amazed me most was seeing them calmly crossing the nearby roads as if they completely belonged there.

It all felt surreal, magical, and unlike anything I had ever experienced before.

Interacting With the Famous Deer in Nara

One of the most unforgettable parts of visiting Nara Park is how close you can get to the deer. They are gentle, curious, and often come near you either for a little stroke or in search of food.

There are stalls around the park selling special deer crackers, which you can buy to feed them. This makes the whole experience even more interactive and memorable.

Walking through the park, admiring the deer, watching their behaviour, and simply spending time in their presence felt absolutely magical. It was one of those travel moments that stays with you forever.

Not even the heavy rain that day could spoil such a special experience.

More Than Just Deer: Temples and Nature in Nara Park

Another reason why I loved visiting Nara is that the park offers much more than just the deer.

Nara Park is very spacious, and during the same visit, it is possible to explore some of Nara’s beautiful traditional temples and shrines within the park. Two of the most famous are Tōdai-ji, home to the giant Great Buddha, and Kasuga Taisha, famous for its beautiful lanterns and spiritual atmosphere. They are some of Japan’s most impressive cultural landmarks.

This makes the trip even more special because it combines wildlife, culture, history, and nature all in one place.

Is Nara Park Worth Visiting?

It is absolutely worth visiting.

If you are a wildlife lover, an animal enthusiast, or passionate about photography, Nara Park is definitely a place you should not miss in Japan. It is peaceful, beautiful, unique, and one of those destinations that feels truly unforgettable.

For me, it was one of the most magical and memorable experiences of my entire trip.

Ending the Day in Nara

To make the day even better, on our way back to the train station, we stopped for a lovely meal at a traditional ramen restaurant, and it was absolutely delicious.

Afterwards, we took the train back to Umeda Station in Osaka, ending such a beautiful and unforgettable day.

Visiting Nara had been a dream of mine for a long time, and it completely lived up to everything I had imagined.

If you are planning a trip to Japan, I would absolutely recommend adding Nara Park to your itinerary.
