My Journey Into Packing Light

The first time I ever heard the expression “pack light” was when I was purchasing a long-haul flight ticket from London to South America with my then 5-month-old baby. The travel agent told me I’d only be allowed one 20-kilo suitcase. I couldn’t believe it.

How on earth could I fit my clothes, toiletries, baby essentials, and gifts for family inside a single suitcase? I was used to traveling from South America to the USA with two massive 32-kilo suitcases. At that moment, the idea of packing light felt impossible.

But here’s the thing: that first “semi-light” trip turned out better than expected. Fast forward a decade, and I can honestly say I’ve mastered the art of traveling light – most of the time with just a backpack, and sometimes a small cabin bag depending on the season. Everything fits either under the seat in front of me or in the overhead compartment.

Why Packing Light is Pure Freedom

Traveling light has completely changed the way I experience trips. Here’s why:

  • Less stress at the airport – No need to rush to check in a big suitcase. Most of the time, I check in on my phone and head straight to security.
  • Faster arrivals – No more waiting around baggage carousels. I walk straight out, ready to start my adventure.
  • Easier transport – I love using public transport to reach my hotel or Airbnb. Carrying around a giant suitcase on buses or metros is a nightmare, but with just a backpack, it’s simple and stress-free.
  • Spontaneity – With less baggage, I am free to take last-minute weekend getaways or mini breaks.

Of course, there are exceptions. For example, when I went to Japan, I couldn’t resist buying unique and techy items, traveling light went out of the window! But that’s a story I’ll share in another post.

My Go-To Packing Routine

Since I travel often, I actually keep my backpack semi-packed all year round. The basics are always ready:

  • Toiletries and a few makeup essentials
  • Sleepwear and comfortable everyday clothes
  • Gadgets – my phone, charger, power bank, and cameras (yes, plural – I love photography and often bring more than one!)

Then, depending on the trip, I just add seasonal clothes or destination-specific items. This makes short breaks so much easier because I’m ready to go at a moment’s notice.

The Mindset Shift

What started as a restriction – being told to fit my life into one 20-kilo bag – turned into one of the best travel lessons I’ve learned. Packing light is not only about saving time and avoiding hassle; it’s about embracing a mindset of simplicity, freedom, and flexibility.

It’s funny how once you get used to traveling light, you realize you don’t actually need much to enjoy a trip. The experiences, not the extra clothes or “just in case” items that you probably won’t need, are what truly matter.

So, I’ll leave you with this question: Do you also travel light, or are you still a “just in case” packer?
